TOOLS OF THE TRADE: LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HATCHET AND AN AXE

While people often use the words axe and hatchet interchangeably, and a hatchet is a type of axe, they are entirely different tools with different uses. It can get even more confusing when you look at hand axes versus hatchets since they're much closer in size. Since we're in the business of helping people learn to – and enjoy – throwing axes, we figured we should try to clear things up.

How to Tell Which is Which

Here's one case where size does matter. A hand axe is roughly two-thirds of the length of a regular axe. A hatchet is about half the length of a hand axe.

You'll also notice that the head shape is different between hatchets and axes. Hatchet heads are smaller and have a much more significant taper, while an axe head is larger and features a very slight taper.

The difference is really notable in the weight of the respective heads since that's what you feel when you wield each tool. A regular axe head can weigh as much as three times that of a hand axe and six times that of a hatchet.

What Do We Provide for Our Axe-cellent Experience?

When you watch the Lumberjack World Championships, the competitors are using heavy double-bit axes. They're the multi-purpose, durable axes that forest workers have used since the 19th century.

Since we're a member of the World Axe Throwing League (WATL), we make sure that the axes housed here meet their standards rules regarding the specific dimensions. That means a blade no more than four inches long, with a total axe length measuring between 12 and 19 inches.

When you're having fun at our axe bar, you'll see these axes in use. Since they have a maximum weight of three pounds, they're light and aerodynamic. This makes them much easier to throw. After all, you come here to unwind with friends and have a good time, not exert yourself or pull a muscle!

Whether you're planning a work gathering or looking for a new way to hang, get in touch to reserve your throwing lanes. It's a great way to kick back, relax, and kick axe!
